Thermophysical Properties

Open-source Thermophysical Properties

Thermophysical properties are a crucial part of thermal energy systems design and analysis. Using properties calculated from state-of-the-art formulations removes one level of uncertainty in design and analysis. Because of this, the author and many of his colleagues believe that high-accuracy thermophysical properties should be made freely available to those who need them. This portion of the website contains thermophysical property tables and diagrams for several fluids. The properties were calculated using standard-reference quality formulations. They may be accessed and downloaded by anyone who will find them helpful in their work. This portion of the website is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Richard T Jacobsen who first inspired the author to consider this open-source vision.

The links in the navigation menu are open-source resources for thermophysical properties. Detailed property tables and thermodynamic diagrams are included for each of the fluids listed.

Recommended Software Resources for Thermophysical Properties

REFPROP is developed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The software is sold through the NIST Office of Standard Reference Data. This software is not open-source. However, it contains standard reference-quality properties for a wide variety of fluids. The software includes a graphical user interface for property calculation and diagram generation, program code, and a MS Excel add-in.

CoolProp is an open-source software package for the calculation of thermophysical properties. With only a few exceptions, the same property formulations are used in CoolProp that are used in REFPROP. CoolProp does not include a graphical user interface. However, it can be accessed by a variety of programming languages. There is also a MS Excel add-in.

Online Resources

This website contains a wealth of standard reference quality information about a wide variety of fluids. Included on the home page of this website is a link to an online thermophysical property calculator that uses the REFPROP calculation engine.

This is an online reference for quick property calculation and diagram generation for many industrial fluids using the CoolProp calculation engine.
